Avalon Beach Developing Company purchased the 7 mile island in 1887 with the intention of making it into one of New Jersey's best beach resorts. Before this the island was used for cattle ranching by numerous families. The name Avalon was given to the town by the brother of the President of the Avalon Beach Developing Company.
Avalon's slogan of "cooler by a mile" comes from the island's location being one mile off the coast. Since the island is off the main land and surrounded by water the climate is cooler...by a mile.
